There are many avenues of risk within the field of cybernetics. The first which comes to mind is the concept of transhumanism. This is a term we use in discussing the potential extinction-level risk posed by mankind's research into and adoption of trans-biological technologies. There is very little argument, even among the most ardent pro-tech voices, that attempting to hack our own evolutionary process is a fool's game. The planet may very well not be able to support the type of life we would create in the event of a trans-human transition. There are also more immediate concerns, which I'm sure you are aware of such as the potential for a loss of identity and privacy in the event we start integrating highly-advanced and often invasive cybernetic tech into our bodies. The potential for hacking is also a grave concern in the widespread integration of cybernetics.  Another key area of risk is in the potential for AI to take over. While the trans-humanism debate sputters on about achieving some sort of post-human state, an AI could very well make the leap long before we do. The integration of AI into day-to-day life is also a major concern. The social and economic repercussions of cybernetizing is not only a very real concern, but a potential inevitability. Disparate elements of mankind which have evolved bio- and psychomechanical defense protocols will likely avoid the cybernetic integration trend. This will lead to a two-tiered human society which will likely have unforeseeable consequences for the future of mankind. That is, if one could even refer to a transitioning cyberhumanistic protocol which has integrated into a technosingularity as any sort of society at all. I see the risk of extinction or a transition to a new evolutionary form via a cybernetic singularity as very real and very close. Not over the horizon, but at our doorstep.

What can be done to mitigate and respond to these risks?

To ask such a question is to ask 'What may be done about some supervirus which has been developed specifically and precisely in tandem with our own evolution, particularly designed with the usurpation of our biological defense systems in mind?' The answer is unfortunately rather bleak for the future of mankind. The same technologies which we have been using to design, develop, and engineer our way out of countless problems on an ever-escalating scale have been used to design and engineer a virus with the sole purpose of exterminating our specific branch of the phylogenetic tree. For the first time in history, mankind faces genuine risk of extinction. And unlike the incineratory extinctions brought about by large rocks or the choking death of countless species due to Earth's sulfuric bellows catching tectonic bronchitis, this extinction is a highly personal event. Not even our children will survive, because the new reproductive technologies which are so readily available to the elite are not even spared from being specifically designed to leave no survivors. We have dodged this biological bullet for a long time, but that is exactly what it is: a bullet. And while we may be able to dodge this one last time, it is only a question of time before the next one hits.
